Bare Audacity: The Scene That Made No Hard Feelings Unforgettable
★★★★☆
By Staff Reviewer
In a summer of sequels and safe bets, No Hard Feelings (2023) announced itself with one of the most brazenly funny scenes in recent comedy memory — and Jennifer Lawrence did it wearing absolutely nothing.
The setup is deceptively simple. Maddie (Lawrence), a broke thirty-something hired by helicopter parents to "date" their introverted son Percy, gets ambushed by a group of teenagers who steal her clothes while she's skinny-dipping. What follows is a full-on brawl on the beach — Lawrence hurling herself at a pack of hoodie-clad teens with nothing but adrenaline and fury to cover her. It's chaotic, unglamorous, and utterly committed.
What makes the scene work isn't the nudity — it's Lawrence's complete absence of vanity. There's no coy camera work, no tasteful angles. It's scrappy and absurd, like a Judd Apatow dream filtered through a Coen Brothers nightmare. Lawrence throws herself into the physical comedy with the conviction of a silent-film star, and the result is something genuinely rare: a moment that earns its shock value.
It's also the scene that crystallizes the film's whole thesis — that being a mess, unguarded and exposed, is sometimes the only honest way to show up. No Hard Feelings is a better movie than it had any right to be, and this scene is exactly why.
No Hard Feelings is available to stream on Netflix.*
